A Community of Contrast- Cultural Distinctions of Asian American Ethnic Groups

Updated: May 4, 2023

May is AAPI Heritage Month, and this is usually the time when we see Asian American advocate groups pump up the content volume on the history, legacy, and involvement of Asians in America. As someone who is passionate about making the world a more diverse and equitable place, one specific article caught my eye. It’s a blog compilation of stories assembled by Medium, the open publishing platform.

In the opening of the article, it says, “We (Asian Americans) are treated as a monolithic group, despite comprising more than 19 groups speaking over 38 languages.” As an Asian American, I am well aware of the heterogeneity that is being defined by a simple two-word phrase. I recall when I was nine, an Indian girl next to me in language class was surprised to see that I had checked off the same box of race when we looked nothing alike. That’s why in celebration of AAPI Heritage Month, I want to share some interesting facts on the culture of the top eight Asian populations. Hopefully, this will help bring more awareness and appreciation around the distinctive beauties of groups within the Asian American culture.
